The Background of Pilates Exercise
Contrology was developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s, it was designed to be a form of rehabilitation and body conditioning. In the 1960s, it became known as the Pilates Method of Exercise. It has evolved and has been further developed by different institutes. Generally, Pilates is now taught in 2 main categories; matwork and machine based.
Pilates emphasises good posture and alignment throughout the body whilst performing exercise and movement involving the whole body in a variety of positions. It is based upon strengthening and maintaining the stable ‘core’ of the body. This is primarily the muscles consisting of the deep abdominals, lower back and pelvic floor.
